Packing Essentials for Traveling with Your Guide Dog

We get it—packing for yourself can be challenging enough, but packing for your guide dog adds another layer of complexity. You might worry about forgetting essential items that will keep your dog comfortable and well-cared for. It’s perfectly normal to feel a bit overwhelmed.

At Vision Loss Travel, we understand your concerns and are here to support you and your guide dog every step of the way. Traveling doesn’t have to be stressful, especially when you’re prepared.

Here’s a packing list to ensure your guide dog has everything they need:

  1. Food and Water: Bring enough food and water for the entire trip, plus extra in case of delays. Consider packing a portable water bowl for convenience. When you are going on a longer trip, check if your destination sells the same food your dog is used to and buy it locally. Make sure it is the exact same type of food, when you have a sensitive dog.

  2. Portable Bed: A familiar, comfortable bed or mat will help your guide dog feel at home wherever you stay. It has that familiar home smell and it will sooth your dog.

  3. Medications: Pack any medications your guide dog needs, along with a copy of their prescription. Keep them in their original containers.

  4. Grooming Supplies: Bring grooming tools such as a brush, and any other items your guide dog needs for their hygiene.

  5. First Aid Kit: Include basic first aid supplies like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and any specific items your guide dog might need in an emergency.

  6. Travel Crate or Harness: If your dog uses a travel crate or harness, make sure it’s comfortable and well-suited for your journey.

  7. Comfort Items: Pack your dog’s favorite toys or comfort items to help them feel secure in new environments.

  8. Cleaning Supplies: Bring waste bags, disinfectant wipes, and other cleaning supplies to manage any messes that might occur during travel.

Packing these essentials will help ensure your guide dog remains comfortable and happy throughout your travels. A well-prepared packing list is key to a smooth and enjoyable journey.
